SOLVED! What Should You Do If Mouse Speed Slowed Down

About mouse speed slowed down, you should go to Mouse settings to speed up the pointer. Alternatively, it’s a good idea to update your mouse driver to the latest version. In the case that the issue persists, proceed to perform System File Checker (SFC) and  Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) scan as soon as possible. Turning off the USB power settings is a good way to restore the speed of your mouse pointer too.

The Root Of The Problem

Settings

For your information, Mouse Settings affect various aspects of mouse operation and speed is one of them. You may configure   Mouse Settings to your preferences but if you mess up, mouse speed slowed down is one of the consequences.

Driver

Every time peripherals act up out of the blue, you must take their driver into account. In the case of the mouse, if the mouse driver runs into issues (corruption, obsolescence, etc), the mouse’s performance would suffer. On the bright side, if the driver is the one responsible, there is no need to do much to bring things back to normal.

What You Could Do

Run SFC And DISM Scan

  • Step 1: Go to Search bar, type cmd and click Run as Administrator to launch Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  • Step 2: In Command Prompt (Admin), run the command sfc /scannow.
  • Step 3: After the SFC scan finishes, run each of the commands down below:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

  • Step 4: When the DISM scan completes, close Command Prompt and restart your computer.

Update Mouse Driver

Nowadays, you could update mouse driver via Device Manager.

  • Step 1: Go to the Search bar, type Device Manager and press Enter.
  • Step 2: Expand Mice and other pointing devices, right-click your mouse and pick Update Driver.
  • Step 3: Proceed to hit Search automatically for updated driver software
  • Step 4: The moment the process wraps up, restart your computer.

Note: It’s possible to download updates for the mouse driver manually. For instance, if your mouse is a Logitech model, feel free to visit the Logitech website to get driver updates.

Apply Changes To Mouse Settings

  • Step 1: Press Windows + I to open Settings, select Devices and choose Mouse.
  • Step 2: Look to the right, locate Scroll Inactive Windows and toggle its switch several times.
  • Step 3: Hit Additional mouse options then navigate to the Pointer Options tab.
  • Step 4: Check Enhance pointer precision, uncheck Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box and check Hide pointer while typing.
  • Step 5: Choose Apply then select OK.

Note: If you are using a touchpad, move the Palm Check Threshold slider to the left and make sure that No delay is checked. Step 7: If you are using a Clickpad, navigate to Clickpad settings > Advanced > Smart Sense then set its filter to 0.

Disable The USB Power Settings

  • Step 1: Go to the Search bar, type Device Manager and press Enter.
  • Step 2: Expand Universal Bus Controller, right-click USB Root Hub and pick Properties.
  • Step 3: In the Power Management tab, uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK.
  • Step 4: Return to Device Manager,  right-click your mouse and pick Properties.
  • Step 5: In the Power Management tab, uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK.
  • Step 6: Close Device Manager, restart your computer and see how things turn out.

What Exactly Is DPI?

Dots Per Inch (DPI) is the metric used to measure the mouse sensitivity. Changing your mouse DPI leads to increases/decreases in pointer speed. As such, it affects your capability to conduct precision tasks such as photo editing or in-game targeting.

What Does Mouse Latency Mean?

Mouse latency is the speed at which your mouse transforms movements into data and transmits it to your computer. A high latency results in quick mouse pointer reactions while a low latency results in slow mouse reactions.

What Is The Ideal Mouse Speed?

The best mouse speed for Windows computers is between 400 and 800 Dots Per Inch (DPI).

Which Is The Best Level Of DPI For A First Person Shooter (FPS) Game?

For  FPS games, it’s wise to keep the DPI low for moderate sensitivity. Such a sensitivity level enables you to make small but precise movements.

Does The DPI Setting Affect Mouse Latency?

No, it does not. Having a high DPI does not mean that the mouse will relay data slower. In turn, a low DPI does not translate into quick data relay by your mouse. Your mouse latency depends on the processing speed of your computer, not the DPI setting.

Recommendations

  • Select a block of text quickly by holding down Shift, click at the beginning of the paragraph and then click again at its end. That will automatically select the entire block.
  • Does your mouse have a scroll wheel? While browsing, press it down on a link to open it in a new tab. Also, you could hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the mouse wheel up or down to zoom in or out.
  • Looking to select a paragraph? Place the mouse pointer inside the text and triple-click. This will highlight the entire paragraph at once.
  • In File Explorer, you may right-click on a file or folder and drag it while holding the right mouse button. When you let go, an option to copy or move the file or folder will appear. The process saves you the hassle of having to right-click its destination.
  • Does your new mouse have side buttons? By default, the left-side thumb button goes back to a previous web page. The right-side thumb button is left free for you to program into any function that’s needed.
